AAPS Mitchell-Scarlett & UM Partnership Proposal
The Ann Arbor Public Schools is exploring the possibility of creating a K-8 campus between Mitchell Elementary School and Scarlett Middle School through a partnership with the University of Michigan School of Education.
In conjunction, a balanced school year calendar is being considered for the program which could include a shorter summer break and “inter-session” breaks for academic enrichment or vacations at intervals throughout the year.
To date, two parents forums have been held to offer basic information on the partnership and encourage discussion in small groups to generate ideas and raise pertinent questions. Feedback gathered from the forums was reported to the Board of Education at the December 8th Board of Education meeting.
We'll be posting updates on this web site as planning continues. Please check back for more information periodically.
To provide more time for thoughtful planning with involvement of teachers, parents, and community members, the balanced calendar will not begin in August 2011, as originally proposed. This decision was shared online and in communications to parents on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010. The planning & calendar committees will continue to work on a plan for calendar implementation, including piloting intersession in 2012.
