Depression is real.Knowledge + Help = HOPE Please join us for a community forum on Child and Adolescent Depression and Suicide Prevention on Wednesday, May 7, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Skyline High School, 2552 Maple Road. Superintendent Todd Roberts and John Greden, M.D., Executive Director of the UM Depression Center will host this community forum and kick off of this very important collaboration. The latest research on depressive illnesses will be presented as well as information about how to recognize and respond to signs of depression and suicide risk in youth and to have an opportunity to ask questions about these important issues. This ongoing collaboration between AAPS and the UM Depression Center will provide depression awareness and suicide prevention education, training and support for AAPS staff. This forum is open to the community. Dr. Greden and Cheryl King, Ph.D., Chief Psychologist, UM Department of Psychiatry and international expert on childhood depression and suicide will be presenting at this forum. Many AAPS staff have already had the opportunity to attend forums on these subjects and this opportunity will reach out to all teaching staff in the coming year. Pioneer High School Parking Lot The Ann Arbor Public Schools and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative@the University of Michigan are co-sponsoring a free e-waste recycling event for the community in cooperation with Apple Computers.
Computer systems, speakers, monitors, printers, telephone/cell phones, wires/cables, televisions, modems. For a complete list of materials, go to climatesavers.umich.edu/e-waste. All e-waste will be destroyed and recycled in the United States using an environmentally sound manner by an Environment Protection Agency-certified company courtesy of Apple Inc. The SPAGHETTI DINNER to benefit the Pioneer High School Football program will be held on Thursday, May 8 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Pioneer high School Cafeteria. Cottage Inn has graciously donated the spaghetti and salad to make this a wonderful event that started 26 years ago! We are grateful to the Michos family for their support of Pioneer Football and their hard work to make this a great evening! Morgan and York have donated root beer! Ticket sales will get under way on Saturday, April 26 at PHS. Look for the tent and flags located near the football field from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 each this year or four may be purchased for $25.00 We have set aside two Saturdays for Spaghetti Dinner Ticket Sales and those dates are Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and again on Saturday May 3, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Look for our flags at Hollway Field! Tickets are also available the night of the event. Our athletes will be out in the community selling tickets door to door in their neighborhoods. In addition to the fabulous spaghetti, we have a live auction that includes many wonderful items such as an Ian Gold signed jersey from the Denver Broncos, a Greg Jennings (Green Bay Packers) autographed jersey, a condo in Cancun for a week, Tiger tickets, lawn service gift certificate, various themed baskets full of goodies plus other sports memorabilia and jewelry. Braun and Helmer Auctioneers donate their services to make this a fun and profitable auction to benefit the Pioneer High School Football program. The live auction will start at 6:20 p.m. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted. Recycle Ann Arbor has announced that Nicholas Lopez-Grueber, a student at Tappan Middle School, is the grand prize winner of its second annual Earth Day essay contest. Students from across Washtenaw County were invited to submit essays addressing the topic, "How can recycling help stop global warming?" More than 135 entries were received. Dan Tolly, music teacher at Ann Arbor Open School, has been awarded the University Musical Society Teacher of the Year Award. UMS Education Director Ben Johnson said, “Dan has emerged as one of the most creative teachers in Ann Arbor. Not only does he bring hundreds of students to UMS Youth Performances each year, but he also attends nearly every teacher workshop, and utilizes that information in his classroom. You may have already had some discussions with your son or daughter about post-high school education and career opportunities. If you haven't, it's not too early to begin. To assist you in this task, the Ann Arbor Public Schools have scheduled their 23rd Annual College & Career Fair at Pioneer High School on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. It is our goal to offer students the chance to explore both educational and career opportunities to plan for their future. Representatives from colleges all over the nation and businesses from the Ann Arbor area will be present to meet with you, answer your questions and provide you with pertinent literature. The colleges will have tables in the cafeteria, which is located near the clock-tower entrance to Pioneer High School, and the businesses will line the A-wing hallway outside of the cafeteria. This night will provide your family with up-to-date information and enable you to make a person-to-person contact with college and business representatives. Five parent and student orientation session have been announced for families interested in applying for Community High School's freshmen slots for school year 2008-2009. The sessions will be held at the school located at 401 North Division Street and are scheduled for:
The application deadline is 4:00 PM Friday, February 22, 2008. Application packets will be available January 14 at all Ann Arbor Public Middle Schools, the Balas Administration Building (2555 South State Street), and Community High School (401 North Division Street). Applications may also be downloaded from the website at http://www.a2community.org/. To be eligible for one of 108 open freshman slots, applicants must be current 8th graders, meet the district's residency requirements at the time of application, attend an orientation meeting with parent/guardian, and submit a completed application to the Main Office, CHS, by 4:00 PM Friday, February 22, 2008. Patron Tickets are now available for the FutureStars Finale, Saturday, January 19 at 7:30pm in Schreiber Auditorium. Patron seats are $25/ticket and provide premium seats, available for purchase in advance, in the middle of Schreiber Auditorium."FutureStars 2008" is Theatre Guild's popular showcase of student talent. FutureStars cast members will test their talents as they sing and dance to songs from four different musical genres. Audience applause decides who will earn spots in the final competition . and a chance to be named FutureStar 2008! Our celebrity judges always add something extra to FutureStars. This year we are thrilled to welcome local radio personality Lucy Ann Lance, as well as UM football players Terrance Taylor and Tim Jamison. The Ann Arbor Public Schools Stone School Adult Education Program will offer daytime and evening GED Preparation classes starting February 5. The day class will run from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and the evening from 6 to 9 p.m., both on Tuesdays and Thursdays through May. This class prepares you to take the GED Test and earn a GED Certificate. The GED certificate is the equivalent of a high school diploma, and is accepted by employers, colleges and trade schools. You must be 18 years old to take the GED test, but there is no age limit on earning a GED. Classes are taught by experienced, certified teachers who focus on the five test subject areas: reading, writing, math, social studies and science. There is a $10 registration fee (refundable when you finish class). In-person registration is required at Stone School between 1 and 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting January 15. The Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation has awarded 39 grants totaling more than $30,000 to AAPS teachers for programs that will impact 7500 students. AAPS Proactive on MRSA BacteriaThe Ann Arbor Public Schools has been proactive in disinfecting our schools against the MRSA bacteria.

There no reported cases of MRSA in our district. AAPS Custodial Services has been very proactive about this health issue. Every school has a disinfectant spray that kills the MRSA staph bacteria. This spray is being used by the custodians to clean gyms, with special attention to gym and wrestling mats, including those hanging from gym walls, locker rooms and restrooms. Cafeterias are also being cleaned with this product but only after all lunch hours are complete. Regular sanitizing continues between each lunch period. The high school field turf fields have been sprayed all season with a disinfectant that does kill the MRSA bacteria. Angell's field turf will also be sprayed with this product. The district is working very closely with local health officials and directly with each school to implement protocol for stopping this bacteria from entering our schools. October 30, 2007 at Clague November 1, 2007 at Forsythe November 13, 2007 at Scarlett The program will begin with a Skyline overview including the core subject areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Then parents and students will have the opportunity to rotate between four presentations of the magnet programs;
Principal Sulura Jackson will be there to answer questions and introduce the Skyline staff. This is an opportunity for Skyline students to see first hand what their 9th grade year will look like and for potential open enrollment students to learn more about this option in the Ann Arbor Public Schools for their 2008 9th grade year.

MealPayPlus is the district's new student meal plan payment program. If you used ParentOnline last year and ended the year with balance in your student(s) account you will need to set up a new account at http://www.mealpayplus.com/ and the balance will transfer into the Meal PayPlus account within 48 hours. The AAPS Youth Senate's Recommendations for Action to the school board and administration for eliminating disparities in Ann Arbor education are available. The Summer/Fall 2007 Draft of Report shows results from the 2 1/2 year Leap the Gap student research project which engaged over 1400 students.
