About the District

The Ann Arbor Public School District serves the City of Ann Arbor and parts of eight surrounding townships covering 125 square miles.

Our Schools

20 elementary, 1 K-8 open school, 5 middle schools, 3 comprehensive high schools, 3 alternative high schools, 1 pre-school and 1 adult education program.

Our Enrollment

The total K-12 headcount enrollment as of September 2009 is 16,458.

Our Staff

The district employs approximately 3,000 full and part-time staff members.  Approximately 81% of our teaching staff hold a master's degree or above.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Ann Arbor Public Schools, a world-class system of innovative teaching and learning, is to ensure each student realizes his or her aspirations while advancing the common good through a community dynamic.

Objectives:

  • 100% of AAPS students will exceed international standards in achievement.
  • Each student progressively achieves his/her personalized educational goals.
  • Students have & demonstrate concern for self and others.
  • Each student is a positive contributor to his/her community.
  • All students are accomplished in their lifelong pursuits.

Transportation Services:

  • The Ann Arbor Public Schools own 132 buses, covers 110 routes over approximately 125 square miles and travels 1.8 million miles annually.   
  • The AAPS bus maintenance department was featured in School Bus Fleet Magazine in 2008 as one of the “Top 10 Shops” in the U.S. & Canada.  The district consistently receives excellent annual inspection results from the Michigan State Police.

Food Service:

  • Food Service serves over 1.4 million meals during the school year.
  • Provides vocational training & job experience for special needs students.

Facilities:

  • We maintain 640 acres of real estate and 3.7 million square feet of building space.  The average school building age is over 50 years.
  • 18 out of 33 school buildings were built before 1960.
  • The district has received national recognition for participation in the Green Lights program, which saves energy while reducing costs.
